Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Sandakan

#2 of 9 in Parks in Sandakan
Nature / Park · Wildlife Area
Visit the home of the island's most iconic natives at Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. Founded in 1994 by a benevolent developer, the reserve protects around 60 of the seriously endangered primates, supplementing their diet and keeping track of their numbers. Visit the center at feeding time to watch the families of these pot-bellied, large-nosed monkeys emerge from the jungle, and take a walk across the reserve to observe them searching for food in their natural habitat. • Off the beaten track and worth seeking out. We tried to book on a Sunday but got no reply but headed there anyway on the Monday. As it is part of a commercial oil palm area then I was grateful to see some wildlife. There were lots of proboscis monkeys at the first location and they showed no interest in the few visitors there. flying around were a pair of hornbills. At the second location the silver leaf monkeys invaded. I have seen these elsewhere and they do come close, this was repeated here. It seems some education is required for staff and the overall organisation but a welcome change from monotonous oil palm plantations. It also has some of the best toilets I have seen in Malaysia!
  • Here you can see very close Proboscis monkey, Silver leaf langur monkey, Hornbill bird. Just 30 min drive from Sandakan town.
