Visit the Buddhist temple Reclining Buddha Wat Chaiyamangalaram to admire its characteristically Thai design. Built in 1845 on land given by Queen Victoria as a gesture of goodwill to encourage increased trade with Thailand, the temple houses the third-largest reclining Buddha statue in the world, measuring 33 m (108 ft) in length. Walk past the flowing dragon statues at the entrance, and admire the idiosyncrasies of traditional Thai patterns and architecture on display throughout the temple. Legend has it that the first monk here was a big fan of laksa (spicy noodle soup): you will notice bowls of the local speciality laid as an offering at his shrine. • Fascinating to compere this temple to the Burmese one across the road. Both are stunning and this one has an enormous reclining Buddha. Very colourful and a great place to visit and quite a contrast....  more
